About The Flying University Project

"And let our people also learn to engage in good (or, beautiful) deeds to meet pressing needs, that they may not be unfruitful." - Titus 3:14

The Flying University Project is a constructive program started in 2017 in the United States to provide a strong educational background in math and basic science to African-American, Latino, Arab, and other nonwhite children from marginalized and under-served populations now under threat from the current oppressive political regime. This project is also intended to serve the increasing number of poor and working poor people from every ethnic background who are also under threat.

What is a “Flying University”?
A flying university is the name for underground, alternative educational groups that arose in countries where access to formal, high-quality education was denied to most of the people living in those countries. Formal, high-quality education in these countries was often reserved only for rich people or for foreigners who were citizens of nations that had invaded, conquered or enslaved the countries whose populations were denied access to education. The flying universities allowed the ordinary citizens of those countries which were suffering oppression to get a quality education for themselves and their children.

A flying university is an example of a “parallel institution.”

What Is A “Parallel Institution”?
A parallel institution is a local, small group of ordinary people who organize to provide needed services for themselves which the rulers and owners of their society refuse to provide, or which they will only provide by charging a price which ordinary people can’t afford.

Why Is Math So Important?
A solid foundation in mathematics allows people to figure out every kind of problem that involves using numbers. Knowing how to use numbers gives people the power to wisely plan the details of their lives, knowing, for instance, how much a particular activity or thing will cost, how long it will take to do the activity or get the thing wanted, and how much preparation it takes to get the thing or do the activity that a person wants. A solid foundation in math is also important if a person wants to become a technical professional – that is, a doctor, a scientist, or an engineer. A lot of careers in the United States require a person to be good in advanced math.
